Art making in various forms has defined Artist Mary O'Connell since her childhood. Growing up, her favorite pastime was getting lost in the pictures and stories of the books she played on her portable tape recorder. The drama of characters coming to life provided an escape into the world of her imagination. Winning a Gold Key Award in ninth grade from the Boston Scholastic Art Competition was the catalyst that influenced her desire to pursue an artistic future. She furthered her art study with numerous drawing classes, art history and printmaking, eventually receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Northeastern University. While raising a family, she continued her artistic interests in painting with classes at the Decordova Museum School, the Emerson Umbrella in Concord, and with private study.
A native of Massachusetts, Mary draws many of her subjects from nature, her love of animals, and her travels. She works mostly in acrylics and loves the forgiving nature and flexibility it provides, often incorporating layers of texture or mixed media, giving her paintings a three-dimensional quality. Her paintings are realistically rendered with modeled form, exhibiting a quiet mood, a moment in time, and an introspective quality. She has received several awards and recognition and has exhibited locally in Concord, Chelmsford, Belmont, and her hometown of Westford.
